The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry
agree to Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party that her 'sexy' act will not
coordinate with the image they want to create for upcoming independence
day.
Avril Lavigne will not perform in Malaysia on August 29 as scheduled due to the opposition sent by an Islamic movement that deemed her act as too "sexy" for the event leading up to the country's independence day on August 31. The canceled gig, however, will be rescheduled by the organizer Galaxy Group, to a new date which will still need approval from The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry.
Based on the meeting conducted on Tuesday, August 19, the ministry decide to give an all-clear to the appeal sent by Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party that fears youths in Malaysia will be influenced by Avril's performance. Speaking on the reason of the cancellation, Shukran Ibrahim who is a senior official from the department said, "It is not timely. It's not in the good spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for."
Galaxy Group, that have not yet given their statement regarding the ban as in press time, promoted the concert even before given permission from the government which is compulsory for foreign acts. It was reported that half of the concert seats have been sold.
Earlier this week, Kamarulzaman Mohamed from Pan-Malaysian told the Associated Press that Avril's sexy image is "not good for viewers in Malaysia." The youth party official said, "We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models."
Foreign acts have to abide to the dress code and stage rules set by the Malaysian government if they want to perform in the country which is largely dominated by Islam faith. They require that the stage costumes should cover from chest to knees and that they should not include any drug-related image. Shouting, kissing, hugging and jumping are also banned from the stage.
Last year, Beyonce Knowles preferred to move the concert to neighboring country Indonesia when the rules were applied to her. Gwen Stefani, however, raised the challenge by abiding to the rules and wear 'descent' clothes.
Avril Lavigne is continuing along with her US tour. She performed at the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Indianapolis, Indiana on Wednesday night on July 23.
The 23-year-old Canadian singer/songwriter now gets to enjoy a day off before hitting the stage in Hershey, Pennsylvania on Friday, followed by a gig in Hartford, Connecticut the next evening.
Meanwhile, Star magazine says that Miss Lavigne “dislikes her sharp, vampirelike front teeth so much that she’s getting them rounded off.”
“Avril hates her fangs,” the magazine’s source said, “She is planning on having them filed down by a cosmetic dentist. It’s just something she has always been insecure about, especially since everyone is staring at her mouth when she sings. As soon as Avril finds some time to take off so it won’t interfere with her singing, she’s getting it done!”
To be honest fangs kinda suit her. There is definitely some charm.
Otherwise ‘Skater Boy’ singer wouldn’t earn $1 million from people watching the video to her hit single ‘Girlfriend’ online. The promo has clocked over 100 million hits on video sharing site YouTube.com since it was posted on the internet by RCA record company executives last year - and Lavigne’s earnings have rocketed as a result. Every time the video is viewed, an advert is played and the singer receives a fee, plus the ads clicks.
Pop star Avril Lavigne is less than one million hits away from scoring the No. 1 most viewed video on YouTube - but doubts have been raised over how her massive ratings have been achieved.
Girlfriend, the first single from Lavigne's 2007 album Best Damn Thing, has had 88,907,202 views on the video sharing site at the time of writing.
That's less than one million views away from YouTube's biggest video, Evolution of Dance.
But doubts have been raised as to whether Lavigne's video has really been watched that many times.
Fans have set up a website that refreshes every 15 seconds, adding to Lavigne's Girlfriend view count.
The website's creator said: "Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend music video is less than one million views away from becoming the most watched video of all time on YouTube.
"So what we're attempting won't be easy but ... Bahh who am I kidding? Of course it will be easy because we have a secret weapon."
The website, which has boosted the clip's tally by just under 120,000 views since it launched on June 19, encourages fans to keep the site open to boost Girlfriend's views.
YouTube has a strict policy that prohibits the use of automated systems to increase page impressions.
It was enforced earlier this year when a fan-made clip of Brazilian band Cansei de Ser Sexy's song Music Is My Hot Hot Sex reached the top spot in record time, before being removed.
